Book Review: The King's Scrolls by Jaye L. Knight

Book Review: The King's Scrolls by Jaye L. Knight
(Book 2 in the Ilyon Chronicles)

5 Stars

Wow, this series is becoming a favorite of all time at this point, and we are only on book 2! If you haven't picked up Resistance, you MUST read it asap because I cannot recommend this series enough. Knight's skillful storytelling and deep character development shine brightly in this sequel, making this series a must-read for any fan of fantasy and adventure.

This is a Christian, non-magical fantasy series that has such beautiful biblical allegory, in-depth characters and found family. In this book, we also have DRAGONS! Let's goooo!

I tabbed this book up so much notating the faith elements, prayers, "wow" moments, etc. This is filled with a lot of action and emotions so get ready!

Set in the richly detailed world of Ilyon, this book dived deeper into the lives of its beloved characters. We see several new characters and creatures, in addition to those returning. They face new challenges that test their limits and strengthen their bond together. I loved the different races of characters and learning about them.

The plot revolves around the ancient King's Scrolls, the Word of Elom, which hold information that could change the course of the kingdom's history and the fate of its people. The story picks up where Resistance left off. We see Kyrin, Jace, Kaden and many others hiding from the emperor as the events from book 1 lead them to Landale Forest. They are trying to settle into their new lives when the emperor's threats continue upon them. Dragon-riding Cretes seek aid in a mission of importance to all followers of Elom.

There is a central theme in this of the power of faith. We see the strength in those who have faith in Elom as He provides it during times of adversity. Many of the biblical allegory moments in this book will be relatable to others in their own faith walk.

To summarize:
Read this if you like:

- Dragons
- Epic fantasy adventures
- Strong character development and growth
- Christian non-magical fantasy
- Found family
- Action packed sequences balanced with emotional depth
- Vivid world building
- Faith, friendship and courage displayed
- Engaging and well crafted plot
- Emotional rollercoaster (I cried in chapters 17-18 and 24 and several other points!)

Highly recommend this series! Start with Book 1! Excited to read book 3!!

Book Review: Are We There Yet by Savannah Scott

Are We There Yet by Savannah Scott - 5 Stars - Book 1 in the Love Trippin' Series

I have been on a road trip book kick lately and Savannah's book Are We There Yet is now a NEW FAV of mine! If you love road trip romance books, pick this up!

🧡Coming of Age Story
🧡Slow Burn
🧡Friends to More
🧡Best Friend's Older Brother
🧡Road Trip Story
🧡No Third Act Breakup
🧡Sweet and Clean Rom-Com
🧡Great Friendship Group
🧡Small Town traveling to California

In this book, we have 4 friends in their early 20s who travel in a vintage VW van across the country on Route 66 from their small town of Bordeaux to Marbella Island (California). We saw a few appearances from some of our Getting Shipped characters, which I loved! This is the perfect best friends road trip story with the rom-com elements added in. Riley has always had a thing for her best friend's older brother, Cameron. She has kept it a secret for so long but on this trip, feelings start to come to the forefront on both sides.

I laughed SO many times, as I usually do in her books. This was the perfect blend of romance and comedy that I needed! I love how Riley and Cameron talked through their feelings and had a lot of good communication as things were progressing. If you want a good, sweet road trip rom-com, highly recommend this one. Excited to see what happens in the next one!

Book Review: The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes - 3 Stars

I love a good story with a will-testament-who gonna get the money plot, so I was excited to pick this one up when I heard it had fun riddles, puzzles and high stakes drama. This book centers around Avery, a girl who unexpectedly inherits a billionaire's fortune, much to the dismay and bewilderment of the his family. While this premise is undoubtedly compelling, I was left a bit confused at times, specifically at the ending.  After talking to a friend who has read the whole series, I realize now that you have to read books 2 & 3 to figure out many things related to the plot that were left open in the end of this first book that I was confused about.

What I liked: The plot is engaging and will keep you wanting to read. Lots of layers of secrets and puzzles and characters. Our protagonist Avery is relatable and a character you root for. The audio narration is very good and makes you want to just read and be along for the ride, whatever that may be.

What I didn't like so much: The puzzles will be something many love about this story, but I found myself very confused throughout the story trying to piece it together. I think this could be because I listened to the audio and didn't physically read it, so giving it the benefit of the doubt because of that. There is a lot of "fake" language in this book I'll say - I don't know how to explain it other than they say things like "motherfoxing" instead of the actual F word itself or "beach" for the B word etc. At first, I laughed about it, but the more I heard that in the audiobook, especially in the circumstances they said it, I rolled my eyes more than anything. I guess its better than using the actual curse words but not by much.

I think this is a good entry into a YA mystery series with an engaging premise and protagonist, but many parts just fell flat for me personally. For anyone looking for a light, puzzle-filled mystery with a dash of romance, this would be entertaining for you!

Will I continue on in the series? Not sure yet, maybe if my friend I buddy read this with does LOL. I am in no hurry to be honest.

Book Review: Mind Games by Nancy Mehl

Book Review: Mind Games by Nancy Mehl - 5 Stars (Book 1 in the Kaely Quinn Profiler Series)

What a great start to the Kaely Quinn series! I have loved each Nancy Mehl book I've read so I am so excited to start this series by her! Kaely is unlike any heroine I have seen in her books so far. She is quirky and unique! Several have said this reminds them of criminal minds with faith content, I have never watched that show but wanted to mention for others who love shows like that.

All the characters were interesting to me and so many suspects - I did not figure this out so I was super shocked at the ending too! My favorite part about Nancy's stories are always the faith elements she weaves in with the suspense and this one did an excellent job of doing that!

In this story, we follow Kaely Quinn, who is an extremely talented FBI behavior analyst. A reporter outs her as the daughter of a serial killer so she is demoted to field agent and transferred to St. Louis. The same reporter who ruined her career claims to have received an anonymous poem predicting a string of murders, ending with Kaely's.........the story continues from here as it appears the poem was not fake and Kaely's life, along with many others, is in danger. Special Agent Noah Hunter works with her to figure this out before it's too late.

My mind continues to be blown away with Nancy's books. Continuing to make my way through these amazing stories! Highly recommend to anyone who loves a good Christian suspense!

Book Review: The Road Before Us by Janine Rosche

The Road Before Us by Janine Rosche - 4 Stars

This is a Christian Contemporary Fiction story surrounding a road trip on Route 66. From the very beginning of the story, you are invested in these characters, their backstories and their journey on this road trip. The story begins with Jade Jessup, in court with her fiancé after realizing he scammed their financial clients out of millions of dollars in a huge Ponzi scheme. One of the clients was a huge Hollywood star back in the 1960s, Berenice "Benny" Alderidge. Benny's adult foster son, Bridger, is filming a documentary retracing Benny's 1956 trip that started the love story between Benny and her recently deceased husband, Paul.

We see Jade, Benny and Bridger's road trip journey in modern day, plus flashbacks of Jade's life in 2003 and Benny's in 1956. Jade is reliving trauma she experience when was kidnapped by her non-custodial father in 2003 traveling through Route 66 when she was 8 years old. Benny is experiencing signs of dementia as she tries to recount her previous life with Paul from 1956. The story continues from here as we see growth, forgiveness and their history as their trip progresses together.

If you like a good Contemporary Women's Fiction story, road trips, Hollywood stories and in depth characters who have went through so much in their lives - pick this up. Jade, Benny and Bridger went on quite the journey along Route 66 in this book. We saw so much of their past, hardships in life and how they planned to move on in the future. This book also tackled some heavy topics such as parental kidnapping, dementia, treatment of POWs, racism, sexual harassment and much more. The author handled each topic very well with grace. My heart broke for what the characters were going through but seeing their journey was beautiful.

Regarding the faith content, there were some good smaller moments of faith interweaved throughout the story. I wasn't a fan of the way yoga was mentioned a couple times in this book but that is a personal preference of mine for Christian books. It was only a couple of things for that, so it didn't take away from the story too much for me but something I wanted to mention.

Overall, anyone who is looking for a great in depth multi-POV contemporary story with a lot to unpack about the past, forgiveness, redemption and moving forward should pick this up!

Thank you to Revell for a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Book Review: For A Lifetime by Gabrielle Meyer

For A Lifetime by Gabrielle Meyer (Book 3 in the Timeless Series)

If I could give this book 10 stars, I would. This series has been absolutely phenomenal. The faith, characters, time travel level of detail and explanations - SOLID. This book is hard to review without spoilers so I will be brief - but all I can say is, this is *hands down* the best Christian Fiction series of all time for me. Nothing compares. If you know me, you know I am constantly recommending this series. From the moment I read book 1, I knew this series was going to be significant in my reading journey. Thank you Gabrielle for these stories. They mean the world.

This book signifies God's plan is truly the best one for us. It reminds us over and over how good His plan really is. He gives us His Grace to go through things and we have the Hope of Christ through every circumstance. It's no mistake these twin sisters have the names, Grace and Hope. I love the significance of their names in this story. Both sisters are relatable in their emotions and what they endure.

For context, we are in two timelines for this time travel story between two twin sisters. They are time crossers between 1692 Salem, Massachusetts during the Salem Witch Trials and 1912 New York. By the end of a certain birthday, they have to decide which timeline they want to live in for the rest of their lives. I thought I knew where things were going fully, but there were so many twists and turns throughout the story that completely blew me away.

The sister relationship was so moving. I loved how sacrificial they were for one another. As a sister to my younger brother, it was very relatable for me. I also loved Luc and Isaac. Both of their characters were top notch and the prayers and support they had for each sister was beautiful.

I am so glad I buddy read this book with 4 other lovely ladies because I truly believe this series should be read with others as we all had so many beautiful moments of tears and sharing how this story touched our hearts and what each of us were going through in those moments of our lives.

I recommend taking your time with this story as you read to fully immerse yourself in the story and process through all of the beauty this story has to offer.

I cannot wait for the next book to release this November! Highly recommend this series. Favorite of all time.

Book Review: The Widow and the Highlander by Martha Keyes

The Widow and the Highlander by Martha Keyes 4.5 Stars

My first Martha Keyes book and will NOT be my last! Excited to read ALL her books now because this was wonderful! As someone who loves a good Scotland setting, especially in the 1700s, this clean historical romance did not disappoint! Such a charming story! We also have one of my favorite tropes - marriage of convenience! :) This is a very well written story with great characters, a sweet romance and an engaging storyline. I read this in less than 1 day y'all!

We start off with Christina MacKinnon inheriting the estate from her husband who passed away. There is someone who was next in line that threatens everything she has inherited when Lachlan Kincaid returns to the MacKinnon's property to reclaim what was rightfully his. Lachlan wants justice served to the MacKinnons for betraying his family years ago and depriving him of his inheritance. What Lachlan finds is more than he anticipated though as Christina and Lachlan's lives intersect and they join forces to achieve what they want together. During this time together, they grow close and a romance begins.....

I truly loved this story. I want to continue in the series and see what happens next! The Scottish details were fantastic for me personally and I loved the sweet romance. Lachlan is the PERFECT guy for her. I loved seeing this because of the bad relationship Christina had with her previous husband.

There were a couple of things I didn’t love about the ending but overall this was a solid 4.5 star book and I’m looking forward to the next one in this series and other books by her!❤️🙌🏼

Book Review: Love for a Lifetime by Mandi Blake

Love for a Lifetime by Mandi Blake - 5 Stars (Book 2 in the Love in Blackwater series)

WOW. LET. ME. JUST. SAY. NEW FAV MANDI BOOK RIGHT HERE! I absolutely love her books and this one is a new favorite now! Dawson was the SWEETEST guy and he reminds you of what a Godly man looks like. I loved the friends to lovers trope in this because he continued to pursue Olivia and always be there for her no matter what. He was a great cinnamon roll MMC!

In this story, we see Olivia Laurence, who is a nurse and lives to serve others in her community, church, family and friends. She works on a farm and helping people and animals are her passion. She desperately wants a family of her own one day but her struggles with endometriosis have her worried about that future. Dawson Keller has cared for his best friend's sister, Olivia. Dawson is a police officer and always shows up when Olivia needs help. He loves kids and is bound to make you laugh! We see the feelings unfold between Olivia and Dawson, but Olivia's lifelong best friend has a huge crush on Dawson and Olivia doesn't want to hurt her so she keeps her distance for the sake of her friend and the story takes off here as Olivia tries to refrain from her feelings for Dawson.

Overall, this was such a sweet romance. We had great faith content with real characters facing real problems together. Mandi knows how to tug at my heart strings with these characters! I loved Olivia and realted to how she felt like she had to do everything for everyone. She truly cared for others and it showed. Dawson was so kind and truly devoted to those around him. The romance was the cute "sliced cheese" ya girl loves in a good book and not that "blocked cheese"! :) Truly felt real and beautiful.

This town also feels so real and I love the friendships and side characters throughout the story. I am looking forward to Gage's story later this year! Thank you Mandi for providing a copy of this book for me to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Book Review: Shadows of Swanford Abbey by Julie Klassen

Shadows of Swanford Abbey - Julie Klassen - 4 Stars

I am so glad I read Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen last year because this had the perfect atmosphere that reminded me of a good Jane Austen meets Agatha Christie regency story! Very reminiscent of the Northanger Abbey itself - so I loved that! Julie Klassen has the best settings in her stories and this was just a good cozy time for me on a Sunday afternoon.

In this story, we follow Rebecca Lane who returns to her home village after a few years away. Her brother begs her for a favor to go to Swanford Abbey to deliver his manuscript to an author staying there so he can get published. She agrees to help him but this grand hotel known as Swanford Abbey is rumored to be haunted. She starts seeing strange things there and runs into Sir Frederick - the magistrate, widower and former neighbor who broke her heart long ago..... A famous author is found murdered in the abbey and the mystery goes on from here as feelings start to emerge for Rebecca as Sir Frederick tries to find the truth of who the murderer is.

This was such a great murder mystery that truly put me in the mind of an Agatha Christie story. We can certainly tell our characters are Christian in their faith and I loved Rebecca and Frederick's love story as they became more than friends in their unrequited love story.

If you love a good cozy, historical mystery with Jane Austen Northanger Abbey vibes, Gothic/Eerie settings and Agatha Christie like story, pick this up.

The only reason it wasn't quite a 5 star for me is some parts dragged for me a little bit, but I was just enjoying my time with the story overall anyway so that's ok!

Book Review: Townshipped by Savannah Scott

Townshipped by Savannah Scott (Book 3 in the Getting Shipped Series)

OK YALL - my FAV Savannah Scott book so far! Absolutely loved it! Aiden and Em have my WHOLE HEART!

Aiden was the sweetest guy in this story - he is such a caretaker and hometown hero - loved him! Em was the perfect match for him too! In this story, we see Em (Mallory) crash her car near Aiden's goat farm after calling off her wedding and having a honeymoon by herself adventure. She has short term amnesia and is unable to remember who she is or why she is there in their small town of Bordeaux, Ohio. Aiden is helping take care of her while she recovers from the accident and the rest is history as sparks FLY!

This book will make you laugh and swoon left and right yall! We have so many funny scenes throughout the book and the characters truly feel like REAL people that you grow to know and LOVE. The more I read this series, the more I love these fictional characters and small town! Can it be real please?!

This cute clean rom-com will keep you laughing, smiling and swooning throughout the entire story! Highly recommend!

Book Review: Loyally, Luke by Pepper Basham

Book Review: Loyally, Luke by Pepper Basham - 4.5 Stars

Pepper does it again with Loyally, Luke in book 3 of the Skymar Series! Izzy and Penelope have been some of my favorite books, just overall great comfort reads. Loyally, Luke does not disappoint as we are following Luke Edgewood's love story with a secret Skymar Princess! If you are looking for a book that just makes you overall HAPPY, pick this up! You can read this as a standalone, but I personally believe you get the BEST Skymar experience by picking up book 1 & 2 first. We follow Luke throughout the entire series so we've gotten to know him and really enjoy his character. So many of us have been looking forward to his romance story and I am so glad Pepper wrote this story!

This story follows Luke and Ellie. Luke is in Skymar to help with some construction work and has a "meet-cute" with Ellie, the Skymar Princess! He is trying to avoid all "hallmark cheese" romance tropes but he ends up with quite the romantic ADVENTURE! I loved all the references to romance tropes in this one, those things made me laugh SO much! And to see the siblings jumping in all about the tropes too, was even better! (Like the whole "meet-cute" discussion LOL) As many others have said, Ellie is really a prodigal princess, her past mistakes follow her and she's trying to discover who she really is. I loved seeing Luke help her along the way with this and the ending was CHEF'S KISS for me with what Luke did!

Luke really reminds me of my own Dad and brother. He's a grumpy southern handyman with a lot of sarcasm and laughs, but he also cares about the people he loves and is one to work hard and take care of those around him. He loves kids, which we get to see in this story too! I would have liked a little more of those details of Luke with the children and details with the orphans, but overall I loved seeing those moments.

I think my favorite thing of this entire series is the sibling relationship. I have a very close relationship with my brother and so much of this is reminiscent of our own sibling relationship! You find yourself just laughing and enjoying the entire dynamic. Also, as a southern belle myself (who loves Scotland), ya'll already know I love the Southern and Skymar settings and characters!

A note of importance, when you compare this to Izzy and Penelope, this is more narrative than full epistolary style. I love both ways of storytelling personally, but wanted to notate that for those interested. We still get bits of text and email threads though throughout the story, which I loved seeing!

There was a nice light faith element in this book too that I really enjoyed seeing added. So glad Pepper wrote this series!

P.S. Readers will love this series for the heartwarming, humorous, sweet rom-com that it is! The PERFECT comfort read.

P.P.S. Also, the audiobook of this was AMAZING with the cast of narrators! Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a complimentary audiobook to listen to. That really enhanced the reading experience for me! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Book Review: What the Wind Knows by Amy Harmon

What the Wind Knows by Amy Harmon - 3 Stars

This was the first Amy Harmon book I have read. I started this book for the first 50% and loving it! It was giving 5 star level. Unfortunately, it ended up falling flat after chapter 15/16 for me personally. I absolutely love Amy's writing style because she can truly tell a good story and keep you interested in what's happening. I own several of Amy's books so I will be continuing to read them as I hear she has some wonderful stories to tell. Further details on what I liked vs didn't below.

This story is all about Anne in the year 2001 who is heartbroken by her grandfather's death. She travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. Right when she is about to do this, she is pulled back in time to 1921 Ireland. Her grandfather is a young boy at this time and she is mistaken for her grandfather's mother after being hurt and taken care of by a Dr. Thomas Smith, who is the guardian of her grandfather after his parents disappeared. With people thinking Anne has "returned", she is thrown into being the "mother" to her grandfather in 1921....so she adopts this as her identity trying to figure out her next steps and the story goes on from here.

What did I enjoy?
1. The writing style and plot itself - I love a good time travel story. The writing is very lyrical and I would consider it beautiful storytelling.
2. The setting - I love stories set in Ireland.
3. Loved the first 50% of this where we saw so much of Anne trying to figure out her new life in this new time.
4. Anne as an author and the stories about her Grandfather were precious to me because I didn't have a Grandfather myself so I love stories that have a Grandfather storyline.
5. Learning about Ireland's history and war details

What did I not enjoy?
1. The romance. I was frustrated with Thomas and Anne's sudden romance that jumped from him learning about who she was to them having sex all of a sudden? I didn't see the build up personally for their romance. He went from not being sure he could trust her to passionately loving her, unless I missed something?
2. The open door sex scenes - 2 of them. I didn't love the sex scenes personally. While they were not "explicit" they were flowery descriptions explaining the act basically. It was a bit much for my personal taste so take me with a grain of salt because that will be different for each person.
3. The time travel details - I needed more explanations personally on how this time travel worked. Can anyone time travel? Do you have to think about someone to go to that time? Do you have to have an item they owned? How do you get to a certain year? Is it a certain place, country etc.? This is a pet peeve of mine in any time travel story. I personally want fleshed out details in a time travel story so I understand how it works exactly to the best of my ability. I also didn't understand a few points in the timelines themselves and how it all played out exactly.
4. Anne trying to change things and reveal things to people in the past. Another personal pet peeve of mine in a time travel story. Another time travel story I read, I really enjoyed where the travelers were not able to change things or reveal things. It was part of the mechanics of it all. In this story, Anne continued to try and reveal things that frustrated me.
5. Something that happens in the end that I can't say LOL It reminded me of Outlander in several ways, but not explicit or anything. Just the tropes and plot points some.

Overall, I still think Amy Harmon could be an author that I love - this is just a book that personally wasn't a favorite of mine. I didn't love it, but also didn't hate it. We'll see how it goes next time!

Book Review: Land of Silence by Tessa Afshar

Book Review: Land of Silence by Tessa Afshar
5 Stars
Favorite Book of 2024

Well, I have found my favorite book of 2024 yall. This book was compelling, transformative, beautiful, encouraging and faith filled. Such a heartfelt novel that explores the power of healing, faith, and redemption. The storytelling here and well-drawn characters make this a must read for anyone who loves a biblical fiction story. We see courage. We see transformation. We see healing through Jesus. I am inspired by Elianna's character and faith.

This is a biblical fiction story surrounding the woman with the issue of blood in the Bible for 12 years. It amazes me that while we only have 2-3 sentences of scripture about this woman, Tessa Afshar was able to tell a fully fleshed out story about this woman and encourage me in my faith as well. We see Elianna go through tragedy after tragedy in this book, yet her FAITH remains strong in God. At one point, she says she has bled for 11 years, and "it hasn't been that bad because it brought her closer to the Lord". PROFOUND. All the grumbling I find myself doing for life's little inconveniences, and this woman says what she hasn't been through wasn't all that bad because it brought her closer to the Lord and she wouldn't give that up for anything. I am inspired by her.

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a beautiful story where the character has come to life and one that explores themes of forgiveness, faith, healing and resilience.

This book will stick with me for a long time.

Matthew 9:20-22 English Standard Version

20 And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, 21 for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.” 22 Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well.
