This was a fun novella to read! I like pirates and mermaids so it was a good little novella to escape in throughout the week at bedtime when I picked up my kindle. 

This is a YA fantasy romance where Lenora is betrothed to the pirate captain. Her father sends her on the boat with her betrothed and Lenora's devastated because the man she thought she would be with has moved on to someone else and she is left betrothed to a pirate captain.

She's on the ship with the roughest crew, having to help out unexpectedly throughout the trip with her loyal pet axolotl by her side. Sirens lurk the waters out in the deep ocean though and they all endure quite the adventure on the seas.....

I think if you like pirates, creatures, mermaids, adventures on ships, check this out. There is some Christian allegory as well as she prays to the "Maker", which was nice.

Lots of action as sirens attack and Lenora is trying to figure things out along the way since the pirate captain is so mysterious to her.

The romance is clean with kisses only. Since it's a novella, things moved super quick, so I would have like a bit more details of Lenora and the Captain interacting and talking I think. But overall, it was a good, quick short novella I had fun reading to suspend reality for a bit.

This continues Bryan's dragon-filled Christian fantasy series world with high stakes, fast-paced action and faith elements. Set in a medieval, King Arthur-inspired world, the story follows Sabina, Hawk, Merlin and their allies as fear spreads through the kingdom via a mysterious toxin poisoning the water supply. The use of portals, memory stone and dragons add such an adventure for this book, continuing right where we left off in book 1.

There is a lot to enjoy here, epic battles, suspenseful rescues, emphasis on good versus evil. I think a lot of teen readers would enjoy this and really, any of Bryan's books.

That said, I personally struggled to connect with this installment. I think it was the shifting perspectives and multiple characters, as that is something I seem to always struggle with. I was not as engaged as I was in book 1 for some reason but I still enjoyed the story and would recommend.

As I mentioned in my review of book 1, please be aware this is a fantasy story with Christian allegory but that it is important to discuss the elements of the story with your child so they are aware of the biblical aspects and what is real versus fantasy. I love how this blends fantasy and the Christian faith together but I think since it had parts with Hades and certain things with the afterlife, magical moments, Merlin etc., discernment from the parent is always warranted in these type of books, regardless of Christian allegory, just to be aware of what your child reads so you can have those biblical conversations if needed.

Overall, solid continuations and looking forward to more by Bryan. Thank you to the publisher for a complimentary gifted copy of the e-book to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Book 1 in this Trilogy 

This is a very engaging, spiritually rich adventure that pulls young readers and even adults into a vivid unseen world with an epic action packed adventure. A great Christian fantasy.  

We follow Xavier and Evan with so many high stakes. The mysterious creature Ruwach introduces them to Ahoratos - the true realms where spiritual battles are fought.....the story goes on from here with these ordinary kids as Prince Warriors in battle. 

The message is clear. You have everything you need. God equips us with the armor and strength we need for the battles we face. The allegory in this had some great spiritual parallels. 

The worldbuilding was really good, enjoyed the pacing - very fast and included themes of courage, identity and faith woven into a very adventurous story. Definitely a page turner!  

I think if you like Narnia, Pilgrim's Progress...or stories like that, this would be for you!

Book 1 in the Dragons Of Camelot Series

OK Y'ALL I need to read all of Bryan's books, this was so great! As a lover of middle grade books and stories such as Narnia, The Hobbit, LOTR....This reminded me of those type of epic stories! Perfect for middle school kiddos and really people of all ages because I had SO much fun reading this. The ending has me needing the next book ASAP too!

This is a Christian Fantasy with mentions of Jesus as their Lord and savior, praying to God and standing for truth but also has mixed in fantasy elements with Arthurian legends -- like Merlin, King Arthur, dragons...etc. It's a great opportunity to remind those reading it that while the faith in the story is real and powerful, the magical elements are just part of the make-believe world. I loved how Bryan tied all that together as he really invites you in to this fun fantasy world.

We follow Hawk and Sabina as they team up to protect dragons from a sinister plot that threatens their very existence. Lots of wild rides, escapes, riddles, twists - overall a good read with themes of faith, courage, the power of prayer and friendship.

I would recommend this for older middle school kids and up as there are themes of battles, some characters being burned, mentioned of death etc.

Book 3 in the Powerless Trilogy

OK, let’s dive into the review! I have sat with this all day and I think I’m going to land on 3 stars for this one. Books 1 and 2 were solid 4 star reads for me, and while my experience reading book 3 felt like a 4-star moment....mainly because I was in that UNWELL STATUS and absolutely NEEDED to know what was happening....it didn’t quite hold up in the end.

You know those "drop everything and read" moments? That was ME! Her writing is great and addictive - but looking at the book itself, it felt a little all over the place.

The last 30% especially got kind of random and, at times, just plain ridiculous. I questioned some events going on that made me like...WAITTTT WHAT? HA! That said, I still had a blast with this series. It is definitely one that will stay close to my heart because I adored Kai and Paedyn so much. Love their romance and banter - it's what has made the trilogy for me honestly.

Kai really shines in some of his chapters here and as always, I loved their interactions and the romance between them.

As for where the plot went with the family dynamics.....NO spoilers.....it definitely took an unexpected turn. One character’s complete shift just didn’t sit right with me. It felt really out of character, random and kind of threw me off. HONESTLY, it also kind of felt like consistency was thrown out the window and she just started freestyling with the plot, lol. Like soooo much happened and I would like waitttt that doesn't feel right to the story. Or we had some plot holes of HEY what about this?! Without resolution.

I also didn't love some of the language throughout, a bit more than previous books. (2 F words I remember, even if one was very situational) and the Bas**** word was used wayyyy too much. Got on my nerves if I am honest.

Other content for consideration:
1 fade to black scene, heavy kisses - honestly the sexual content did not bother me at all, it was whatever. But adding note for readers who are interested. Still closed door on the romance side. The violence was a bit more intense as well, example: burns, blood, stabs etc., It didn't bother me personally BUT I can recognize it will be too much for some. Language - S, D, H, A, BAS, BIT, and 2 F words. Maybe more words I forgot, but that gives you the general consensus.

I liked seeing the ending with the epilogue but there was a second epilogue that confused me so much. It talked about the afterlife and whatnot that I didn't really understand what she was trying to do with that character after the events that occurred.

While I know I talked about mostly what I didn't love in this, I still have enjoyed this series and the experience while reading it with friends and sharing it with you guys too. If you want to read a YA angsty, dramatic fantasy romance series with closed door romance, and are ok with language and some violence, then this is one I would recommend looking into.

Book 1 in The Nordic Wars Series

Winter's Maiden is book 1 in The Nordic Wars series and my first Morgan L. Busse book! I read this with some friends, which added to the experience. It's such an atmospheric read - feels like TRUE winter! If you like Viking style stories, Nordic wars, icy survival, warrior heroines and Christian fantasy books - check this series out.

This has 2 POVs - Brighid and Kaeden. It's not a romance really - its a story of growth for our characters. Brighid is a clanless one - who was raised by the woman who helped deliver her. Her father left the day of her birth, leaving her unwanted, and her mother died in childbirth. 

She earns her place among the legendary Nordic warriors. She’s gritty.... determined, and strong on the battlefield. Her journey from outcast to elite fighter is awesome. 

On the other side of the war, Kaeden is a healer. I loved his spiritual depth his character brought to the story. 

When Brighid and Kaeden's paths cross, things shift, to say the LEAST. Their interactions are laced with intensity. You really FEEL the weight of the choices they make.

The worldbuilding is rich and wintry, perfect for fans of Norse-inspired fantasy. I also liked the allegory to God as the "Word" in this story. Really added to the book. 

The book ends where you NEED book 2, and I will definitley pick it up. The only downsides I have to this book is I struggle with fantasy personally (sooo grain of salt here, please), but I had a very hard time with the names, clans etc., and keeping up with the plot and what was going on. That is a personal thing for me.

Regardless, looking forward to book 2 later this year!

This book TOOK. ME. OUT. What can I even say when it's book 2 in this series without spoilers?! All I will say it, I absolutely loved where Lauren took this story. If you thought the stakes were high before.....PREPRARE YOURSELVES! Everything is more intense, dangerous and emotionally charged. Reckless picks up right where Powerless left off, throwing you back into a world of power, betrayal and lots of angst. Pacing is really good in this one with our main characters experiencing one thing after the next. 

The plot thickens.....relationships are complex.......and Lauren Roberts just does a great job evolving her characters - Paedyn in particular. She is strong-willed and resourceful....but we do see ab it more of her vulnerabilities here, making you really empathize with her. 

AND YES. IF YOU ARE HERE FOR THE ROMANCE --- WHICH WE ALL AREEEE -- the CHEMISTRY and TENSION is TOP TIER. 

Fans of the slow burn romanceee will LOVE this.

There is a constant thread of survival in this book and I am here for the finale!!

This series is perfect for fans of enemies to lovers romance, high stakes dystopian style fantasy, sharp heroines, found family and complex alliances.

We are back in this duology with Iris and Roman! We pick up a couple of weeks after Divine Rivals, with a story of heartbreak. The stakes and emotions are higher than ever before as Iris and Roman have to find their way back to one another....but Dacre doesn't make this an easy task....

I can't say too much because it's spoilers but what a wild ride! I was invested in the relationship of Iris and Roman and rooting for them the entire time. I don't necessarily care about the politics or war of what's going on, the characters and romance is what makes this story for me! (The politics was interesting about half way in but usually I wasn't that interested lol)

Since I can't say too much...I will say I was in that I NEED TO KNOW/I AM UNWELL mode for most of the book. However, the ending did fall flat for me in a few places where I felt like the pacing went from very fast past to a lackluster slow unsurprising ending. Either way, I still LOVED the romance bits and Iris and Roman are one of my favorite couples now!

Content: mild language 2 times, fade to black married couple scene, war battles but not too much detail

Really enjoyed this one more than I was expecting to yall!

In this we see 18 year old Iris Winnow who just wants to hold her family together. Her mother is suffering from addictions and her brother is missing from the front lines. Her best bet is to win the promotion at the Oath Gazette. Iris is writing letters to her brother and slips them beneath her wardrobe doo where they vanish and go into the hands of Roman Kitt, her cold and handsome rival at the paper. He anonymously writes her back and the two of them forge a connection that follows them to the front lines of battle, where the least expect it.

I loved Roman and Iris together in this book. I didn't really care about the gods and war stuff, I was just here for Roman and Iris! I loved their banter, their letters back and forth and all the things that get revealed in the end LOVED THAT. I loved their romance and anything to do with them together. 

The first half was a bit not as interesting to me, but the last 50% - WOW, it goes by fast with action, battle, bombs etc. I would say the first half was 3-3.5 and the last half was a solid 4 so thats why my rating is 4 stars :)

I am excited to read the next one. I loved the letter from Roman in Chapter 33. The romance that bloomed after that - beautiful. So excited to read book 2 - that cliffhanger thoooo. Need book 2 ASAP. I am so glad I read this with my friend Theresa because I need to chat about this!!! :)

Content: In this book, there is one open door marriage bedroom scene described, but I appreciate that it was between a married couple and it's intention was a bit more romantic / sweet. It did ride a fine line for me though - any more detail and it would have been too much for me personally, so if you are someone who is bothered by more physical intimacy, then that scene may be one to skip or you may sit this book out. There is some small language but it's very minimal. One female character is mentioned to have a wife. War scenes with violence, blood, etc but nothing too much on that front. Some death as well here.

Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb

 

Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb - 4.5 Stars (Book 2 in The Farseer Trilogy)

Y'all, last year Assassin's Apprentice was a book I challenged myself to read to start the HOBB journey in support of my special friend Chrissie! Hobb is her favorite author and she is always reading her friend's favorite books so I wanted to continue the tradition this year by reading book 2 in this series for Chrissie's birthday month! A full vlog is coming tomorrow August 2nd!

So, the review: 

Royal Assassin, the second book in the Farseer Trilogy, is a masterful continuation of the saga that began with Assassin's Apprentice. The story picks up right where book 1 left off, following the life of FitzChivalry Farseer, a royal illegitimate child and trained assassin, as he navigates the treacherous politics of the Six Duchies. 

In book 1, Fitz was just a child in his training. We follow Fitz in his coming of age journey in his teenage years in book 2. 

One of the standout features of Royal Assassin is Hobb's ability to create such a rich and immersive world. She has such an attention to detail where each sentence really matters. I recommend if you read this series, you must take your time. This was a book over 600 pages and it took me about 2 weeks to go through it over time, even with the audiobook. I wanted to try and understand each part the best I could, especially since I am not always a high fantasy reader. 

Hobb draws readers in with medieval-like settings of Buckkeep Castle and its surrounding regions. The backdrop of political intrigue, magic and looming war provides a compelling and dynamic environment for our characters. 

Fitz, as the protagonist, is a deeply complex and sympathetic character. We really see him struggle with loyalty, and the burdens of his training. You really grow to love and feel for Fitz in his story. We see mentor relationships grow, a love interest develop and a very interesting dynamic with characters like the Fool in this book.

The plot is very intricate and well-paced with a great balance of action, intrigue and character development. We see several storylines such as the threat of the Red Ship Raiders, internal power struggles within the Royal family and Fitz's own personal journey. 

The magic system in this book was also developed and discussed a bit more as Fitz learns more how to use it and how it works exactly. The Wit, a telepathic bond with animals, and the Skill, a form of telepathic communication and influence, add layers of complexity. Fitz's struggle to control and understand these abilities is a compelling subplot that adds depth to his character and the overall story. I personally love the Wit and seeing the bond with animals Fitz has.

Overall, this book is a richly crafter and emotional fantasy story that builds on themes of loyalty, duty and sacrifice with skillful storytelling. Fans of epic fantasy will love this and I am excited to read the next book in the trilogy to see what happens next.

The King's Scrolls by Jaye L. Knight

 Book Review: The King's Scrolls by Jaye L. Knight
(Book 2 in the Ilyon Chronicles)

Wow, this series is becoming a favorite of all time at this point, and we are only on book 2! If you haven't picked up Resistance, you MUST read it asap because I cannot recommend this series enough. Knight's skillful storytelling and deep character development shine brightly in this sequel, making this series a must-read for any fan of fantasy and adventure.

This is a Christian, non-magical fantasy series that has such beautiful biblical allegory, in-depth characters and found family. In this book, we also have DRAGONS! Let's goooo! 

I tabbed this book up so much notating the faith elements, prayers, "wow" moments, etc. This is filled with a lot of action and emotions so get ready! 

Set in the richly detailed world of Ilyon, this book dived deeper into the lives of its beloved characters. We see several new characters and creatures, in addition to those returning. They face new challenges that test their limits and strengthen their bond together. I loved the different races of characters and learning about them. 

The plot revolves around the ancient King's Scrolls, the Word of Elom, which hold information that could change the course of the kingdom's history and the fate of its people. The story picks up where Resistance left off. We see Kyrin, Jace, Kaden and many others hiding from the emperor as the events from book 1 lead them to Landale Forest. They are trying to settle into their new lives when the emperor's threats continue upon them. Dragon-riding Cretes seek aid in a mission of importance to all followers of Elom. 

There is a central theme in this of the power of faith. We see the strength in those who have faith in Elom as He provides it during times of adversity. Many of the biblical allegory moments in this book will be relatable to others in their own faith walk. 

To summarize:
Read this if you like:

- Dragons
- Epic fantasy adventures
- Strong character development and growth
- Christian non-magical fantasy
- Found family
- Action packed sequences balanced with emotional depth 
- Vivid world building
- Faith, friendship and courage displayed
- Engaging and well crafted plot 
- Emotional rollercoaster (I cried in chapters 17-18 and 24 and several other points!)

Highly recommend this series! Start with Book 1! Excited to read book 3!!

Lost in the Caverns by Kathryn Butler

 

Lost in the Caverns by Kathryn Butler - Book 3 in The Dreamkeeper Saga - 4 Stars

In this book we continue our adventure with 12 year old dream keeper Lily McKinley as she embarks on a dangerous journey through the Desert of the Forgotten to regain her ability to dream and spread Pax's message. This book continues the themes of fantasy, Christian themes and allegory with mystery throughout the series. The allegory shown relate to the Gospel of Jesus and other theological conversations surrounding sacrifice, salvation and evangelism. This was quite the adventure once again! I had so much fun being back in this world with our characters, as I have had quite the break since book 2. 

I love the allegory message of the Gospel of Jesus in this story. We see characters who represent satan as well and the message of what the Lord has done for us is beautifully depicted in this series. If you like stories like Narnia, good versus evil and great Christian allegorical themes - pick this series up. So many great biblical messages where our characters learn from their mistakes, display courage and find the truth.

Beren and Luthien by JRR Tolkien

 

Beren and Luthien - JRR Tolkien - 4 Stars

The story of Beren and Luthien itself would be 5 stars for me, but this book had a lot of excess commentary I was not personally invested in from the editing Christopher Tolkien did. It appears from other reviews the story of Beren and Luthien is from The Silmarillion - but this book would be worth purchasing if you are someone who would love to see the details behind Tolkien's writing from his son's point of view and the artwork throughout the book is worthwhile. The version in The Silmarillion is very straight to the point from what I have seen in another review but this one is closer to "normal prose" where it's the same story told again in a different way in verse. I think since I am not really a poetry or verse person, I prefer the original story. 

The Story of Beren and Luthien is reminiscent of Arwen and Aragorn in that this is the story of a mortal man who fell in love with an immortal elf. Beren has the quest to steal a Silmaril from the crown of Morgoth. Also, Aragorn in LOTR is a distant descendant of Beren and Arwen is a distant descendant of Luthien - so interesting to me!

I think the best thing about this book is the love sotry set against the backdrop of the First Age of Middle Earth, during a great time of strife and conflict. Beren is driven by his love for Luthien and takes on what seems like an impossible tasks to win her hand in marriage. Luthien is there to help Beren with her abilities and together they face trials. I also love that this love story is celebrated as one of the greatest love stories in Tolkien's mythology, illustrating themes of sacrifice, courage and the power of love to overcome even the greatest obstacles. You can also see, as someone who has already read The Hobbit and LOTR trilogy, how this plays a significant role in shaping the history and fate of Middle Earth, as their descendants are a critical component to future ages.

Overall, glad I read through it, even if there are some parts I don't fully understand in the verse and notes from Christopher. I would like to go back one day and see what I missed.

 OK, ALL I WILL SAY IS WOWWWW WHAT A GREAT SECULAR YA FANTASY I NEEDED! ITS THE ROMANCE FOR MEEEEE. YOU CAN CUT THE TENSION WITH A KNIFEEEE LIKE BUTTTTERRRR!

*It's giving FANTASY HUNGER GAMES AND I LOVED THAT! We have trials, and lavish descriptions, interview with those in the trials, the purging is the reason they have the trials etc.
*We have a "faction-like" set up -- our main girl Paeydn is an "ordinary", our main guy Kai is an Elite. She is pretending to be an Elite with psychic abilities and saves Kai in a crazy situation. Kai and her end up in the trials together and a romance with the ULTIMATE tension happens! The kicker?! Kai is the son of the king and kills Ordinaries as his job....but he doesn't know the girl he is starting to fall for and who saved him is an Ordinary--- YALLLLLLLLL!
*Scratches the itch you need for books like Hunger Games, Red Queen, Divergent etc.
*I was in the "I NEED TO KNOW" feels for most of the books
*Great book to buddy read

Now, let's talk content and why it wasn't 5 stars but it felt like 5 stars up until the ending. The reason it felt like 5 stars up until the end...all the things above that I loved! What didn't I love? I didn't love the amount of language throughout the story, it didn't typically bother me but I do think it could have been cut down (no F words but several S, D, A etc). Also the drinking in this book was a bit random, it felt like adding real life things in a fantasy world haha but just want to mention there is some drinking in this.

There is a lot of blood mentioned in battle scenes that are reminiscent of Hunger Games type fighting with blood descriptions. Those didn't really bother me because I was so involved in the story and the romance. However, I did find some scenes at the end bothered me with the gore/brutality in one fight scene. There was also a love triangle brought in I didn't love because the brothers are very close and I didn't love some of the betrayal going on there with the girl and the brothers but it's YA and I can move on lol. It's expected. The ending I wish we had some context given to one of the characters and some communication BUT I see what she is setting up here for book 2 so it's all good!

I think Lauren Roberts writing is very engaging and she did an AWESOME job with this series introduction and tying in so many things from previous words/books that so many of us have grown to know and love but she made it her own original story and I loved that!

Return of the King - J.R.R. Tolkien - Book 3 in the Lord of the Rings trilogy

4.5 stars

What an epic conclusion to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. This book is a masterful conclusion to a story that has truly captured the hearts of so many - including myself. Tolkien truly had the best storytelling, world-building and character development in his stories and I see why this series is a favorite of many generations, one that people of all ages can enjoy.

We see Frodo and Sam's journey to Mount Doom with many emotions as they grapple with the weight of the ring and the toll it takes on their friendship and their very selves. Sam is a true hero in this story - we see how much he cared for Frodo as his friend and would do anything to keep him safe and finish the journey they set out to do. Specifically, the moment he says how he may not can carry the ring, but he can carry Frodo - my friend Lindsay noticed this was Christian allegory moment and I am so glad she mentioned this to me because I would have missed it. Context: Sam is carrying Frodo up Mount Doom in the final stages of their journey to destroy the One Ring, helping him to complete his mission, and carrying his burden as he struggles to fulfill his purpose - just as Jesus carries the struggling believer.

There are many Christ-like traits of characters in this series you will notice and I love that. Sam is the suffering servant and faithful companion. One website correlates Sam as a suffering Christ who loves his friends so passionately that he will never abandon them. I truly see this in Sam's character.

We also see the true corruption that the One Ring did to Gollum and was trying to do to Frodo throughout the story. This ring represents the evil or sin that lurks within all humans - those who come near it are lured by its power, promise -- and it can become an idol so easily to the person that carries it - and we see the true destruction it can do.

We also see Aragorn, the rightful king of Gondor, start to step into his destiny with honor and duty that is truly inspiring.

Middle Earth will always be my favorite fantasy world because it truly comes to life in vivid-detail with the grand cities of Minas Tirith and the Shire to the dark lands of Mordo and Mount Doom. Such an immersive world.

The only reason this wasn't a full 5 stars from me was because some of the parts with Sam and Frodo felt a bit long for me personally, and the Scouring of the Shire part was a bit randomly thrown in after they got back (glad that wasn't in the movies personally, that would have been oddly placed for the plot and ending).

Regardless, whether you are longtime fan of Middle Earth or someone new to the journey, this series is a must read and an all time favorite for me.

What can I even say? There is just something about Lord of the Rings that brings me comfort and pure happiness. I highly recommend the narration by Andy Serkis - top tier. He sounds just like every character from the movie so it makes it much more like listening to a movie from his voice. AMAZING. Maybe that is why I was so engaged. My favorite parts were with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, plus the chapter about Treebeard was AWESOME.

I like that we got to see the splits between what was going on with Merry and Pippin, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, plus other characters, and then cutting to Frodo and Sam at the end. 

This book exudes all things friendship, bravery, loyalty and strength. While there are some parts that may drag at times, I was still completely immersed while reading, well listening :) 

Sam has become one of my favorite characters after this book. I mean, he truly is the reason Frodo continues and as the quote says above, Frodo wouldn't have got far without Sam. So much truth. We all need a Samwise Gamgee as a friend. Sam sees Gollum for what he has become and is capable of - and we almost see Gollum as an example of what Frodo could become should the ring corrupt him too. So Sam continues the quest, looking out for Frodo and keeping a careful watch on Gollum - for good reason - throughout their quest.

I also really enjoyed the parts of Faramir and their meet up with Sam and Frodo. Very interesting to see the conversations and to discuss Boromir's end. 

We also start to see Aragorn evolve as a character here and really become a leader. I can't wait to see more of him in Return of the King.

Overall, such a classic tale and I can't wait to continue in the next book.

Heart of Red, Blood of Blue by Rebecca Belliston - 5 Stars - An amazing standalone Christian fantasy story!

This is all about Princess Gisela of Steinland who was born with albinism. Her betrothal to Prince Jerrik of Kronga ended in his death and a 10 year war started with her father. Her father keeps her hidden for many years until he wants to use her to agree to another alliance and betroth her to an awful leader. A Krongon war commander, Bloodless Kristoff, is also after Gisela after killing her siblings as well so that puts a lot of stress on the situation. Gisela runs away and starts finding the truth as she flees.....her ultimate goal is to end this crazy war. Can she do it?

OK YA'LL READ THIS BOOK. It's an ALL time favorite. I loved the unexpected plot twists that I didn't see coming, it has amazing characters and kept me on the edge of my seat! I was SHOCKED at the ending when things were revealed. Highly recommend for those who want a good, clean Christian non-magical fantasy story.

I loved the faith elements we had in the story, her cross necklace, prayers and almost like angels for her who would show up to help her (other Christians who showed up in answered prayer).

Content warning: There are some violence and blood in this during the war battle scenes but otherwise language free and clean.

Twilight - Stephanie Meyer - 4 Stars - Just a fun nostalgic read :)

This book is just a fun nostalgic read and I had the best time laughing and reading through this! I did a vlog and movie commentary with my hubs and we had the best time just picking at things and remembering old times when we would go and watch the movies in theaters when we first started dating. This isn't the best book in the world of course, but again, it's not meant to be. Its a pure comfort read for me and just a fun reminder of the book series that got so many of us back into reading back in the day. My fav characters in Twilight are Alice and Jasper haha and I was always Team Edward but of course, in New moon I would switch around back and forth on that LOL. Not much of a review here, just random thoughts, but just a good time book. (But for real, how did we not see how toxic dis was back in the day LOL jkjk) Still love me some Twilight after all this time.

Resistance - Jaye L. Knight - 5 Stars - A wonderful surprising read! Great start to a Christian non-magical fantasy series! (Book 1 in The Ilyon Chronicles)

WOW, what a wonderful surprise! I read my friend Celestria's favorite books and this was a 5 star read for me! :) A great start to a Christian Fantasy series! Even if you are not someone who loves fantasy, ya'll would LOVE this because it's more of a fantastical "world", set in medieval times then fantasy elements in the story so it's easy to understand with great characters! The reason I loved this so much is the Christian allegory was TOP TIER! I felt Daniel/Shadrach/Meshach/Abednego vibes - these people are NOT going to bow down to false gods - we are here for this story ya'll!

In this story, we follow Kyrin and her twin brother, Kaden, as they are training in Tarvyn Hall. They are believers in Elom (allegory to God) but they have to keep their belief hidden. Things get crazy when Kyrin is forced to go work for the Emperor Daican to read people. The Emperor wants everyone to worship these false gods and anyone who doesn't will be sentenced to death.

Then we have Jace - half human, half animal - does he have a soul? People doubt it and have always looked upon him with fear and contempt because the half animal in him has always been very dangerous and a vicious kind. But Jace is a believer in Elom and is trying to hold on to what little faith he is starting to have left as he feels it crumbling from all the hardship he has been through. He works under Rayad - a father / mentor figure for him - a wanted man but a main of faith who helps him and they grow close during the next few years together. Things get crazy for Jace and our character perspectives start to mesh together as they begin to form their resistance together.......

As I said, the best part of this was the Christian Allegory and the characters ya'll. SO GOOD.

Overall, book 1 in the Ilyon Chronicles is one of my favorite books of 2023 and can't wait to get into the rest of the series!

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

 

Spinning Silver - Naomi Novik - 4 Stars - 3 Brave Women making hard choices and sacrifices.

This is the story of 3 brave women who each have their own hard choices to make, quests to embark on and sacrifices to make. Told in 1st person, with multiple perspectives, I think we have 6 in total, but a few primary perspectives. Many have said this is a Rumpelstiltskin retelling, but I would say it’s loosely based on that and truly made into its own fairytale. We follow 3 main women’s stories – Miryem, Wanda and Irina. Each have an important role to play in this quest to stop the all-consuming threat – the king of the Staryk – grim fey creatures who seem to be more ice then flesh.

I feel like we had some great “found family” vibes in this book and the story truly kept me engaged – especially since Fantasy isn’t my go-to genre. That’s really why I give it 4 stars, because I read this in 1 day – I was SO interested and engaged in the story. This book really has winter vibes to the highest level – it really feels like winter is personified into its own character – which I love. You truly feel the atmosphere while reading it.

My only complaint is the chapters/perspectives are not labeled, so I had the hardest time trying to figure out who was talking sometimes – mostly at the beginning as Naomi does a pretty good job differentiating the voices of the characters in general, but I still think this book could benefit from having titles for each POV throughout the story, especially since they’re all 1st person.

Our characters were very strong-willed women and I loved it. Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders, but her father was not making the effort to get their money back. With their mother sick and no food in sight, Miryem takes things into her own hands and sets out to claim what is owed. She becomes known for being able to turn silver into gold, which gets the attention of the king of the Staryk, leaving Miryem with some extreme struggles. Miryem is also Jewish, so I loved seeing the details surrounding her traditions and family. Very layered. I wish we had more of those details.

Then we have Wanda, she is hard worker who works for Miryem to pay off her father’s debt but also starts working for her own money as well. Her mother passed away and her father is extremely abusive, so she is so thankful Miryem basically saves them from their bad home life by taking her to work for them. Wanda is a strong woman who will do anything to protect her family and those she cares about.

Lastly, we have Irina, whose Father schemes and wants her to marry her off to the “tsar”. We are following Irina’s crazy path with this “tsar” as he holds a secret within himself that threatens ALL.

Miryem and Wanda were my favorite characters but Irina was great too. Overall, a wild adult fantasy story that I thoroughly enjoyed! THAT ENDINGGGG had me on the edge.

Content warnings: I would say this is a secular, adult fantasy story that leans a bit on the grimdark side, deals with family trauma, parental abuse, family death of parents and children, alcoholism and discussions of sexual assault. One character has a dark side that some may find rides a fine line of what they could be comfortable with – as it did for me, but I was overall ok with how it was portrayed.
