Book Review: Anne of the Island by LM Montgomery

Anne of the Island - LM Montgomery - #3 in the Anne of Green Gables Series - 5 Stars

Ya'll I loved this one so much! Anne goes on a new adventure as she packs her bags and heads for Redmond College. We see Anne really making her own choices and living life with friends and I just loved seeing her realize there was still good things to come in her next stage of life. I love the secondary characters and Davy made me laugh so much with his questions to Anne.  I also love Anne and Gilbert SO much! Excited to read the next one.

Book Review: The Roads We Follow by Nicole Deese

The Roads We Follow by Nicole Deese
(Book 2 Fog Harbor Romance but can be read as a standalone)
4.5 / 5 Stars

Nicole Deese tells a powerful story of love, loss, dreams and family in this road trip novel filled with faith, forgiveness and in depth characters you will LOVE!

I LOVED the ending most of all in this book. I was teary eyed at the beauty depicted in the family reconciliation.

In this book, we follow Raegan Farrow and Micah Davenport - we see how their worlds collide in the "roads they follow" and the answers they find together.

Raegan is the youngest daughter of a country music legend, Luella. Raegan's biggest dream is to publish her small town romance under a pen name, where she doesn't just get her book out there because of who she is. After that dream is shut down, she hears a rumor about a tell-all being written about her family and she isn't sure what to do about it or if she should tell her mother and sisters what she's learned.

Cut to Micah Davenport, who is the son of Lynn, Luella's old country music partner and friend. Lynn passed away and Micah has just come to the realization that his father isn't the man who raised him. He comes in contact with Raegan's mother and realizes she needs a driver for the 2 week road trip across the country with her family.

Micah takes this opportunity to find the answers he seeks from a box of old journals from his mother that could possibly have what he's looking for. Together, they embark on the road trip across the country and he finds more than he expects in a relationship with Raegan along the way.

I really liked how we had the 2 perspectives here of Micah and Raegan. I don't think I would have loved it it as much as I did had I not had his point of view. We really got to see the depth in both characters and what they were going through.

I loved the romance most of all in this book - he was so funny with his quick sayings and references. I also loved how supportive he was of Raegan in her author career as her sister was very uptight about it and saying it was just a hobby, yet Micah really encouraged her to following where God was leading her.

Some of the journal entries I did skim around in, but only because I really just wanted to get back into the relationship with Micah and Raegan :) I loved them together.  I did enjoy learning about Lynn and Luella's friendship and past though.

I loved how Raegan seemed to finally come into her own by the end of the story - standing for what she loved to do and really pushing her and her 2 sisters to all come together and reconcile and not let things be left unsettled as they were with Lynn and their mom so many years ago.

I loved the faith content as well in this book, we saw prayers and really relying on God's plan in every aspect of their journey. We saw forgiveness and finding peace among the chaos.

If you love these things, pick this up!
- A cute romance and fun road trip story
- Country music star back stories
- Journal entries about the past
- Reconciliation among family
- Great faith content and character development

Thank you to Bethany House for providing a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts are my own. Highly recommend ya'll.

I will have a full reading vlog for this book on my YouTube channel, BookLoverAmanda, on Monday, April 29th at 7:00 a.m. here: https://youtu.be/2mrwcrncClM (this is the link once it is live!)

Book Review: Love in the Storm by Mandi Blake

Book Review: Love in the Storm by Mandi Blake - 4.5 Stars!

Ya'll Mandi Blake does it AGAIN! Her books are always just the BEST comfort reads for me personally and I loved this one. A snowed in trope, forced proximity, characters with depth, a sweet romance, great Christian faith content, what more could we ask for?!

In this story, we have Lyric who is a new Christian with a troubled past filled with drugs, alcohol and mistakes. She's been clean for 5 years and is a new Christian excited for her journey with the Lord. When a snowstorm sneaks up on them, Lyric gets stranded with the handsome police officer, Asa, who arrested her 10 years ago. He doesn't recognize her right away but she's worried how will he feel after he finds out her past... They get to know each other and the rest is history as a romance blossoms.

I loved the way Mandi wrote this story. It was a quicker romance but YALL even though I am not a quick romance person, Mandi ALWAYS gets me hyped for the couple and their romance! The way she writes it doesn't feel like instalove to me, it feels natural and just a feel good, sweet, Christian romance. I appreciate that about her stories. I also love how layered these characters were. Lyric had her past mistakes she was dealing with and Asa had the grief of losing his wife to cancer several years ago and how to live life as a single Dad on him. I also LOVE the single Dad trope finding love again, so that was a bonus for me.

Overall, I loved this book and am looking forward to book 2 with Dawson's story since we met him in this one.

4.5/5

Book Review: Wild Montana Skies by Susan May Warren

Wild Montana Skies - Susan May Warren (Book 1 in the Montana Rescue Series) - 3.5 Stars

This is the start to the Montana Rescue series and I enjoyed my time with it. I was listening to the audiobook but the lady's singing pulled me out the story some, so I switched to the e-book at the end. In this story, we follow Search and Rescue helicopter pilot Kacey Fairing who is back home in Mercy Falls, Montana and her ex, Country Music Star Ben King. Ben left his past behind when he moved to Nashville 13 years ago to start his career. But when his father is injured, he comes back home and realizes things were not exactly how he left them 13 years ago. We quickly find out Ben and Kacey had a daughter together and this is the first time Ben learns about her because of so many misunderstandings years ago. Ben and Kacey work together for many different situations throughout the book and we see their relationship start back up in this second chance romance story. Meanwhile, we have a side story of Ian and Sierra (who work together) have their mixed feelings story going on throughout this book as the search for Esme (Ian's Niece) and Dante continue....

Overall I enjoyed this story but did get a little frustrated with the Ian and Sierra side story. I know I need to read the next book, but there was so much back and forth with them thrown in the middle of Kacey and Ben's story. I think I would have rather had more of that in the second book with them but I understand we are setting up the scene for book 2 here. Wasn't sure how I felt about Ben at first but really liked the ending. The faith content was great in this book. The characters really trusted the Lord and even when they questioned, by the end, they realized He was there with them in the situations they were going through.

"Having faith is the bravest thing we can do. It's the unwavering confidence that God loves us. That
although we can't see the road ahead, we can see God."

I will definitely be continuing on in the series.

Book Review: The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center

The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center - Releases June 11th 2024 - 2.5 Stars

Honest discussion incoming. I started this book really enjoying the storyline and feeling like Katherine Center can just tell a good story. 2 Screenplay writers in Hollywood working together to write a rom-com?! Let's go right?! And I will say, I really enjoyed The Bodyguard and Hello Stranger by Katherine Center, so I was so pumped for this one! (And I will still be reading her backlist because I have heard nothing but great things about those!)

Unfortunately, this newest one just wasn't for me for several reasons and I ended up being disappointed. I am very appreciative to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy to honestly read and review of the eBook and audiobook - and the narrator did a great job in narrating the story to keep you engaged - I did want to keep reading and listening - but like I said, it ended up not being for me.

As I mentioned this is about 2 Screenplay Writers who are working together to write a rom-com together. We have Emma and Charlie. Emma is ultimately a character I started off really enjoying because I found her, at first, to have such depth as a caregiver to her family and very relatable because I am a special needs Mama and have experienced caregiver fatigue just as she has. I loved how passionate she was for her writing and was so excited for the project they were going to work on.

The story kicks off as her ex-boyfriend from high school introduces her to Charlie, a famous screenplay writer in Hollywood, to help him with his horrible rom-com he's written. Charlie is a guy she has idolized and fan girled about for years in her screenplay writing career, so she is nervous and so excited to go on this journey. Her family encourages her to go because it's a once in a lifetime opportunity for her and she has sacrificed so much for them. However, Charlie wants nothing to do with Emma because he says he doesn't need help and it wasn't exactly approved for her to work with him at the start. After reading her work, he realizes she is a good writer and asks her to stay. She ends up staying and living with Charlie in his mansion for several weeks to help write the story and everything takes off from here.

Here is what I didn't like:

While I started off liking Emma, I became frustrated because of how much she is pursuing Charlie when he is completely mean and rude to her. There are several situations where he talks bad about her behind her back and she overhears it. For example, Charlie was married before and Emma overhears Charlie talking bad about her to his ex-wife (and the friend who introduced them) saying she was "nobody" and "just a writer" etc., yet there were times I felt like he did like her and showed emotions for her? So, while I understand the reason he felt like he couldn't be with her, he was just so rude for no reason and she didn't know any of those reasons. Yet she still peruses him. Over and over again. So ultimately, Charlie was a character that was just so back and forth for me and I had mixed feelings throughout the story about him. I felt like we needed his POV to really understand him since its first person and we just feel like he likes her but then he treats her bad several times so you end up frustrated with him.

Around 78% is where I almost DNF'd this book because of a scene that, while this entire book was considered clean romance, this scene frustrated me on a personal level. Essentially, Emma is upset for a certain reason and ends up getting drunk during that time at Charlie's place. She is pursuing him and trying to proposition him to have sex with her and it could just be a 1 time thing, that is doesn't matter etc. He says no, he doesn't want to, she is not able to consent because she is drunk and she thinks to herself how "ugh. now he was throwing consent at me? How was I supposed to argue with that? Maybe I could use my feminine wiles." And so continues to try to proposition him for sex with him continuing to say no. That bothered me because it portrayed her in such a negative way. So in that moment he's being a good guy, yet she's mad about it.

I did ultimately finish the story and see the happy ending they had, but I was just over it at that point. They didn't really go together for me personally - it felt toxic in a way. So all of those things lead me to this 2.5 star review. With some things I liked but it was overall, not for me.

Again, I do like the two previous Katherine Center books I have read by her but unfortunately, this one was just not for me. I will be reading more of her backlist but not recommending this one.

Content: language - several F and S words, sexual innuendos, death of a parent, parent with an illness, cancer, divorce, caretaker fatigue and other details explained above.

Book Review: Leaning on Air by Cheryl Gray Bostrom

Leaning on Air - Cheryl Grey Bostrom 4.5 stars

What a roller-coaster of emotions packed into this book! This book follows Celia and Burnaby, who knew each other as teens and reconnected 12 years later and end up married. After a decade of marriage, they find themselves going through some of the toughest years of their marriage with many traumatic events. Celia is devastated with the after effects of everything she has endured and Burnaby is trying so hard to make their marriage work. We follow this couple on their journey to overcome tragedy together and we see how God is involved the entire time.

This was was such an impactful story - especially to me as an Autism Boy Mama. I specifically loved the introduction when Burnaby is explaining how God has been with him through his autism - when he is explaining what's helped him in his growth - the way it was explained means a lot to me because as an Autism Mama, we worry about our own children with the unknown of "will our children be able to make the decision to follow Christ?" Seeing Burnaby's story and faith in God gives me hope for my own son to be able to make that decision one day for himself.

I love how Burnaby truly fought for his marriage with Celia. Calling over and over, trying to diagnose her in what she's going through, following her to the ends of the earth to make sure she is ok because he cares so much for her. He may not always be able to express it in the best way because he is autistic and he struggles with sensory issues in being touched, but he truly loves her. I also love how he talked to Celia about how the Lord loves their child and understands what it's like to lose one. It was beautiful and got me so emotional. Celia is skeptical of God throughout the story.

With Celia and Burnaby's jobs being very involved in science as an ornithologist (person who is an expert on birds) and a veterinary surgeon, you will see all kinds of nerdy details on physics but thankfully, the author explains everything along the way. It was very interesting to learn more about their professions. You also learn a lot about Washington State's Palouse - which is one of the most serene and pastoral farm areas of the state. It certainly made me research this area to see how beautiful it was for myself!

This story may have been filled with grief and trauma, but God was moving throughout this story and through Celia and Burnaby's marriage issues and reconciliation. I think the only thing that could have made this a perfect 5 stars was seeing a bit more faith development with Celia and a little more detail of how things played out in the end but I really enjoyed this!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Content Warnings: Detailed miscarriage, grief surrounding miscarriage, parental and other family member deaths, mental abuse from a parent, fade to black marital sex scene.

Book Review: Battleshipped by Savanah Scott

Battleshipped by Savannah Scott (Book 2 in the Getting Shipped! Series) - 4.5 Stars

What a fun second chance - high school sweethearts rom-com! You will laugh SO many times while reading this and I think the audiobook was fantastic! Great small town setting with amazing friend groups too! The banter was hilarious and the situations they got themselves into make me crack up so much.

This features Rob and Laura who dated in high school but upon graduation, Rob broke it off to go to MIT for college. Skip to 6 years later when he is back in town and continues to run into Laura. Are they meant to be? Are things going to be the same as they were before? Is the spark still there? They start interacting and hanging out - and the sparks fly! The chemistry is off the page here and I loved seeing Rob trying to win her heart.

I think the pacing was just a tad slow for me at the start but once things picked up, I was INVESTED ya'll! I love these characters so much and can't wait for the next one!

Highly recommend as a clean, cute rom-com!

Book Review: Shattered by Dani Pettrey

Shattered by Dani Pettrey (Book 2 in the Alaskan Courage Series) - 5 Stars

I loved this second book in the series. Landon and Piper's romance story was great and the suspense had me on edge, as usual.

The Storyline: Deputy Landon Grainger is very close with the McKennas, just like they are family. When Piper's prodigal brother Reef is back in town and is accused of a murder he didn't commit, we see Landon involved in finding the truth.

This book is set in Alaska, which is one of my favorite book settings. I love this family, the friends, setting, romances and how Dani sets you up for the next couple for the next book. We saw so much of Gage, Piper's other brother, and learn a lot of his past as well. Book 3 features his romance with Darcy, a reporter he works with in this book. I am highly anticipating Gage's story! The faith content was great too as we saw several moments of prayer.

Book Review: The Nature of A Lady by Roseanna M White

The Nature of a Lady by Roseanna M White - 4 Stars

Storyline: In 1906, we follow Lady Elizabeth (Libby) Sinclair who loves all things microscopes and nature, but isn't favored by society. She travels to the beautiful Isles of Scilly for the summer and stumbles right into the secrets left behind by the cottages former occupant, also named Elizabeth, my has mysteriously vanished! Oliver Tremayne - a clergyman - is determined to figure out what happened to his sister Beth as he starts to get to know the girl who is staying at her summer cottage, Libby. They end up working together to solve this mystery.

I really liked this book, it kept me engaged and I really liked the romance that blossomed between Oliver and Libby. I also enjoyed seeing Libby's faith journey. Libby had many faith questions and Oliver really helped her see she is fully known by the Lord.

One of my favorite quotes: “He knows your name. Not Libby, not Elizabeth Sinclair. Your true name, the one at the heart of you that has never been spoken. He knows you, and He calls you by it. You, in all your uniqueness. You, in everything that differentiates you from others. You, in all you have in common with them. He knows you, and He calls you by name. He knows how you fit into this world.” - LOVED that. As the story progressed, we really saw how Libby came to see that science and faith don't have to be at odds. There were some beautiful prayer moments as well.

Libby was such a complex and unique character. I love how even though she wasn't the "typical female" of society for the time, we really see her embrace who she was and her interests and how Oliver cares for her no matter what.

What's even more interesting is Libby is someone he met randomly 2 years ago and they each share a love of botany and biology.

I know some have mentioned having issues with the "theology" in this book but I felt like everything was fine for me personally. Nothing overstepped any beliefs for me and it was general enough talking about the Lord knows us by name and the prayers mentioned were very nice for me personally.

I also love how this had some fun pirate details and treasure hunting aspects!

Overall, I really enjoyed my time with this and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Book Review: The Women by Kristin Hannah

The Women by Kristin Hannah - 4 Stars

The Women is such a hyped book right now and I see why! What an impactful read where Kristin skillfully weaved in the details of the Vietnam War, showcasing the women who served as nurses there during that time. I absolutely loved this book and you will not be able to put it down - that's for sure. The only reason it wasn't a full 5 star perfect read for me was some things going on with the romance throughout the story but I overall enjoyed it. This one is going to grip you, pull at your heart strings and not let go.

We follow our main character of Frances "Frankie" McGrath, a "good girl at home" with her family in the 60s. We see her brother go off to war and she is inspired to follow in his footsteps after graduating nursing school and being told by her brother's friend that "Women can be heroes too." War heroes are very important to her father so she also wanted to make her family proud as well. Unfortunately, things do not go to plan as she hoped. Her parents are so scared and disappointed when she enlists in the army so she can go serve in Vietnam because of the circumstances surrounding her brother's service. We follow Frankie's journey to Vietnam and it's real, raw, gritty, emotional, sad, violent - everything in between.

Grab your tissues because the tears throughout this story yall! So many. I learned so much about Vietnam and the war that I was unaware of or only saw bits and pieces of in the movie Forrest Gump. It was tragic how our Veterans were treated back then when they returned from war and the horrors of war itself.

We really see Frankie go through so much in her experience with loss, grief, depression, PTSD - so much that she has no idea how to handle on her own. She really needs help, therapy and can't get anyone to help her. She goes to the VA only to be told there were no women at Vietnam and treated as if she is crazy. And her parents have no sense of being proud of her when she returns so she is just lost on this journey to figure out what to do.

Her best friends, Barb and Ethel, were my favorites because they really stood by her, even when they left they would check in on her and they were not going to let her just sulk or be alone. They were going to make sure she was ok and could begin again back home. I loved their female friendship group.

This is really a coming of age story for Frankie as we see  this young girl from such a conservative family, go to war and grow up in a sense from all the horrors of war she sees as she saves many men's lives.

I loved seeing Frankie's journey. The poor girl just about couldn't catch a break but by the end - the happiness I was seeking was worth it.

Now, let's chat content for those who are interested because on my channel and page, I make sure to explain content where I can:

Content discussion:
Trigger/Content warnings include: Sexism, Infidelity, Attempted Suicide, Miscarriage, Psychiatric Hospitalization, Graphic war details for blood, gore and injury depiction, Medical procedures, Death of a family member, Explosions, Bombings, Child death, Gun violence, Military and Vietnam War chemical gassings and violence, Mistreatment of our Veterans, War Time Language, 2 Mild Open Door Sexual Scenes that lead to fade to black so very little detail.

Overall, the content did not bother me except for the infidelity. I did not like the infidelity depicted in this story, even if you feel empathy during the situation, it's not something I agree with having in the book. I see why the author did it for the plot and character growth in the situation but still didn't like it. The sexual scenes in this were not something I loved but they didn't ultimately take away from my enjoyment of the story. They were very brief and not too too detailed as other books would be. To me, Kristin is not trying to write smut here, its what the characters are going through during the time and makes sense in the scenes so I overlook it personally. But want to mention there were those 2 scenes for others to be aware of. I will say, the act of sex is not specifically described and it does fade to black in those situations.

Regarding the war time violence, I believe it was necessary to truly show the shock and horrors of war and what Frankie and her fellow nurses went through in Vietnam. But if you are sensitive to this type of details, you might skip this book because there are a lot of details surrounding lost limbs, blood, gore etc.

Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good war story, coming of age story and in depth historical fiction and can handle the content above.

Book Review: Love in Tandem by Becca Kinzer

Love in Tandem - Becca Kinzer - 4 Stars

Love in Tandem was SO funny! I loved Dear Henry, Love Edith last year by Becca and was so excited to dive into her next read and I was not disappointed! I laughed and laughed in this book! If you are looking for a book that is light hearted with LOTS of laughs, this is for you!

I really needed this book to during the time too after reading a fairly heavy historical fiction read. So glad I picked this up! I love Becca's writing style too!

In this story, we follow Charlotte who is a music teacher. She realizes that the grant funding for the school's music program is getting cut and she is concerned about how to continue the program. We see Charlotte in a HILARIOUS meet cute situation meet up with Zach Bryant - her brother's ex-fiancé- and somehow their family thinks they are dating! So, in this fake dating situation and thrown together in a 500 mile tandem bicycle contest for some BIG prize money- and you have a great story that is sure to bring lots of laughs.

There are also a couple of nice faith moments. I did want more with the romance personally, so I feel like this was more "com than rom", but still really enjoyed the story. I also loved reading the author's note and learning about Becca's real life experience on a 500 mile tandem bicycle trip with her husband - how fun!

I look forward to seeing what Becca writes in the future! One of my favorite authors for sure. Highly recommend!

Thank you to the author and publisher for a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Book Review: Wolf Children by Mamoru Hosoda

Wolf Children - Ame & Yukoi - Mamoru Hosoda - 4 Stars

Hana falls in love with a young man in her college class but learns he is part wolf. They fall in love and when they have children, we see this cute picture of their family together and little wolf children. Unfortunately, as soon as you start this book, you find out quickly that  their father is killed, leaving Hana as a single mother to try and raise her little wolf children, not knowing the best decisions to make throughout the story.

This story was beautiful, yet sad. I am so glad I read through it and really want to watch the film now. So emotional. Hana was just wanting to do her best as a single mom and take care of her children the best way she could. I loved seeing others help her too along the way.
